Alyeschem has officially broken ground on its North Slope petrochemical factory in Prudhoe Bay.

The facility will convert natural gas and carbon dioxide into methanol and hydrogen, with hydrogen used to refine ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel. Once operational, it is expected to be the first petrochemical plant in the U.S. Arctic.

This project represents a major step toward local production of critical commodities that are currently imported, including methanol and ultra-low sulfur diesel. It also supports Alyeschem’s long-term goal of reducing North Slope emissions, improving fuel supply reliability, and creating value-added chemical production in Alaska.

The facility is expected to come online in late 2027 and support approximately 15 operations jobs.

Alyeschem CEO J.R. Wilcox shared at the Alaska Sustainable Energy Conference:

“We actually have steel going in the ground now. This took about eleven years from the point when I was, ‘Oh, this would be a neat idea,’ to the point where we’re actually getting to make it happen.”

Congratulations to Alyeschem, AIDEA, BP Energy Partners, McKinley Alaska Private Investment, and all project partners involved in bringing this milestone forward.

Alyeschem broke ground on a North Slope factory to produce methanol and ultra-low sulfur diesel, set to be running by the end of 2027.
