The 1st petrochemical facility in the US Arctic

Alyeschem LLC is a local company developing a distributed chemical manufacturing (DCheM) facility on the North Slope of Alaska to supply critical chemicals—including methanol and low sulfur diesel (ULSD)—to an isolated market where local natural gas can address supply-security challenges and high logistics costs. The facility is now under construction, and first product delivery is expected in late 2027.

Today

The Alyeschem plant will immediately reduce the operating costs and air emissions for the two highest volume products used in North Slope oil production. This improves our state’s economy and energy security, supports current jobs, and does it in a way that is good for the environment. The facility is now under construction, and first product delivery is expected in late 2027.

  • Fairbanks Air Quality Nonattainment
  • DCheM Proof of Concept
  • Reducing traffic on the Haul Road

Tomorrow

The base plant can then be expanded to further reduce costs and emissions through local production of EOR chemicals like HPAM, commodity chemicals like windshield wiper fluid or formalin, and blending of specialty chemicals used for corrosion control.

Long Term

The availability of methanol and DME for development of cleaner alternative fuel engines will enable dramatic reductions in pollution and a carbon-neutral power system for the oilfield and North Slope communities based on locally produced fuels. The goal is true energy independence for the communities of the Arctic. This long-range vision is reinforced by recent North Slope Borough support, highlighted in the resolution referenced here, underscoring the alignment between Alyeschem’s development plans and the region’s priorities.

The isolated market which makes this DCheM concept possible also means that we need good long-term relationships with all of the stakeholders.  That includes all of the operators, service companies as well as the North Slope Borough and local communities.  This is a project that will benefit everyone.

LOCAL

Founded, operated, and majority owned by Alaskans who care passionately about the future of Alaska.

PRACTICAL

Using core reformer and methanol synthesis technology that has been used and improved for over 100 years, yet benefiting from the recent availability of improved catalysts, automation, and energy integration products.

GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

The elimination of a 5,000-mile supply chain will immediately reduce the CO2 emissions associated with the current methanol and ULSD used on the slope. Additionally, Alyeschem will convert a blend of natural gas and waste CO2 into methanol, thereby prevent its release into the atmosphere.

BLACK CARBON PARTICULATE MATTER

Diesel generators produce significant particulate emissions, which have a disproportionate impact on global warming in the arctic to darkening and rapid melting of the snow downwind from these sources. Methanol or DME engines burn perfectly clean with no particulate matter. This greatly simplifies the maintenance of these engines due to the elimination of exhaust treatment and makes them preferable fuels for arctic power generation.

REPURPOSED

Makes use of a vacant gravel pad built almost 10 years ago.

FAIRBANKS LNG

Alyeschem was able to quickly sell 10-acres of gravel pad to Harvest LNG, enabling delivery of North Slope natural gas to the growing Fairbanks market.
